SGVS India community outreach programs in rural Jharkhand

Our Programs

Comprehensive Eye Care & Community Health Initiatives for Rural Jharkhand

What We Do

Transforming Lives Through Targeted Programs

At SGVS India, our programs are not just about providing medical treatment — they are about building a comprehensive ecosystem of eye care that reaches every corner of rural Jharkhand. Each program is carefully designed to address a specific gap in healthcare access, whether it is the absence of diagnostic facilities in remote villages, the inability of families to afford cataract surgery, or the lack of awareness about preventive eye care among school children and the elderly.

Our programmatic approach integrates community outreach, clinical excellence, and sustainable impact. We work hand-in-hand with local panchayats, schools, government health departments, and international development organizations to ensure that every initiative we undertake is both impactful and enduring. From free eye camps that bring care to the doorstep of the most marginalized communities, to school screening programs that catch vision problems before they derail a child's education, our programs represent the frontline of our battle against preventable blindness.

Program 01

Free Eye Care Camps

Our free eye care camps form the backbone of SGVS's community outreach strategy. Organized in collaboration with local panchayats, community leaders, and partner organizations, these camps bring comprehensive eye screening and treatment directly to remote villages across Khunti and surrounding districts. Each camp is meticulously planned — from site selection based on epidemiological data and community needs assessments, to the deployment of trained ophthalmic assistants, optometrists, and supporting staff who travel with portable diagnostic equipment including slit lamps, auto-refractometers, and vision charts.

During a typical camp, every patient receives a thorough vision assessment, intraocular pressure measurement, and detailed anterior segment examination. Those identified with refractive errors are provided with spectacles on the spot or through a follow-up distribution system. Patients requiring surgical intervention — particularly cataract surgery — are counseled, registered, and transported to SGVS Hospital at no cost, where they receive advanced treatment including phacoemulsification with intraocular lens implantation. The entire surgical pathway, including transportation, surgery, post-operative care, and follow-up, is provided completely free of charge.

Over the years, SGVS has conducted more than 500 such camps, screening over 50,000 individuals and identifying thousands of cases of preventable blindness. These camps have become a lifeline for rural communities, many of whom would otherwise never have access to specialized eye care. The trust we have built through consistent, high-quality camp delivery has made SGVS a household name across the region, with villages often requesting repeat camps and referring neighboring communities to our services.

School Eye Screening Program

Children are the most vulnerable to undetected vision problems, which can severely impact their academic performance, social development, and future opportunities. SGVS's School Eye Screening Program is designed to identify and address visual impairments among school-going children in rural Jharkhand before these conditions cause lasting damage. Our trained teams visit government and private schools across Khunti district, conducting systematic vision screenings using age-appropriate testing protocols and equipment calibrated for pediatric use.

The screening process goes beyond simple visual acuity tests. Our optometrists conduct comprehensive assessments including refraction, binocular vision evaluation, color vision testing, and screening for common childhood eye conditions such as strabismus (squint), amblyopia (lazy eye), and congenital cataracts. Children identified with refractive errors receive custom-prescribed spectacles, while those with more serious conditions are referred to SGVS Hospital for specialized treatment. We maintain a robust follow-up system that tracks each child's treatment progress and ensures compliance with spectacle wear.

A critical component of this program is teacher training and awareness. We conduct workshops for school teachers, equipping them with the knowledge to identify early signs of vision problems in their students and refer them for professional evaluation. This creates a sustainable, school-based referral network that continues to function long after our screening team has visited. Since its inception, the program has screened over 15,000 children, distributed thousands of free spectacles, and identified hundreds of cases that required specialist intervention — cases that would otherwise have gone undetected until irreversible damage had occurred.

Program 03

Cataract Surgery Assistance Program

Cataract remains the leading cause of blindness in India, and in rural Jharkhand, the situation is particularly acute. Thousands of elderly individuals lose their sight every year simply because they cannot afford the cost of surgery or the associated expenses of traveling to a hospital. SGVS's Cataract Surgery Assistance Program was created to eliminate this barrier entirely, ensuring that no individual suffers from curable blindness due to financial constraints. The program covers the complete cost of cataract surgery — from initial diagnosis and pre-operative assessment to the surgical procedure itself, intraocular lens implantation, post-operative medication, and follow-up care.

Our surgical team performs both manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery (SICS) and advanced phacoemulsification, selecting the technique most appropriate for each patient's clinical condition and circumstances. All surgeries are performed at SGVS Hospital using state-of-the-art equipment and adhering to the highest standards of surgical safety and infection control. For patients identified through our outreach camps who are unable to travel to the hospital on their own, we provide free transportation, accommodation, and meals during their stay, ensuring that the entire treatment journey is seamless and stress-free.

The impact of this program extends far beyond the individual patient. When an elderly person regains their sight, they regain their independence — their ability to care for themselves, participate in family life, and contribute to their community. It also frees younger family members who may have been serving as caregivers, allowing them to return to work or education. With over 12,000 successful cataract surgeries performed through this program, SGVS has restored not just vision but dignity and self-sufficiency to thousands of families across the region. Our post-operative follow-up rate exceeds 95%, reflecting the trust our patients place in our care and our commitment to long-term outcomes.

Mobile Eye Van Services

Launched in 2016, the SGVS Mobile Eye Van represents a transformative innovation in rural healthcare delivery. This specially equipped vehicle is essentially a complete eye clinic on wheels, capable of providing comprehensive diagnostic and screening services in the most remote and underserved areas of Jharkhand. The van travels to villages that have no healthcare infrastructure, setting up camp in community spaces and transforming them into fully functional eye screening centers within minutes.

The mobile eye van is equipped with advanced diagnostic equipment including a portable slit lamp with imaging capability, auto-refractometer, non-contact tonometer, and a digital fundus camera for retinal screening. It also carries an on-site spectacle dispensing unit that can provide corrective lenses to patients with refractive errors immediately, eliminating the delay and inconvenience of a return visit. The van is staffed by a dedicated team of ophthalmic assistants and optometrists who are trained not only in clinical procedures but also in community engagement and patient education.

What sets our mobile eye van apart is its integration with telemedicine technology. When complex cases are identified during field visits, our team can connect with specialist ophthalmologists at SGVS Hospital via video consultation, enabling real-time diagnosis and treatment planning even in the most remote locations. This hybrid approach — combining the reach of mobile healthcare with the expertise of hospital-based specialists — has proven remarkably effective in bridging the urban-rural healthcare divide. The van covers an average of 15-20 villages per month, ensuring that even the most isolated communities receive regular eye care services.

Vision Awareness Campaigns

Prevention begins with awareness, and SGVS's Vision Awareness Campaigns are designed to address the deep-rooted myths, misconceptions, and lack of knowledge that prevent rural communities from seeking timely eye care. In many villages we serve, eye problems are often attributed to supernatural causes, or dismissed as an inevitable part of aging, leading to dangerous delays in treatment. Our awareness campaigns use a multi-pronged approach combining community meetings, street plays, radio broadcasts, pamphlet distribution, and door-to-door visits to disseminate accurate information about eye health and available services.

Each campaign is tailored to the specific cultural and linguistic context of the target community. We work with local artists and community leaders to create engaging, relatable content that resonates with rural audiences. Street plays — a powerful medium in rural India — are used to dramatize the consequences of neglecting eye health and the transformative impact of timely treatment. These performances draw large crowds and generate organic discussions about eye care within the community, creating a ripple effect of awareness that extends far beyond the immediate audience.

Our awareness campaigns also focus on specific health observances such as World Sight Day, World Glaucoma Week, and National Eye Donation Fortnight, organizing special events that attract media attention and amplify our message. We collaborate with Anganwadi workers, ASHA workers, and other community health volunteers who serve as our ambassadors on the ground, spreading awareness in their daily interactions with families. This decentralized awareness model ensures that eye health messaging becomes a part of the everyday conversation in rural communities, leading to earlier health-seeking behavior and better treatment outcomes. Data from our monitoring systems shows that villages that have received awareness interventions show a 40% increase in eye care service utilization compared to those that have not.

Elderly Eye Care Support

India's elderly population is growing rapidly, and with age comes a significantly increased risk of eye conditions such as cataract, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and age-related macular degeneration. In rural Jharkhand, elderly individuals face a double burden — they are more likely to develop these conditions and less likely to have access to the specialized care required to treat them. SGVS's Elderly Eye Care Support program is specifically designed to address the unique needs of senior citizens in rural communities, providing them with comprehensive, accessible, and compassionate eye care services.

The program operates on multiple levels. At the community level, we conduct dedicated screening camps for individuals aged 60 and above, with special attention to conditions that predominantly affect the elderly. Our screening protocols for this age group are more extensive, including dilated fundus examinations for retinal assessment, gonioscopy for angle-closure glaucoma detection, and detailed optic nerve evaluation. At the hospital level, we have established a fast-track system for elderly patients that minimizes wait times, provides assisted navigation through the hospital, and ensures that they receive priority scheduling for diagnostic tests and surgical procedures.

Understanding that many elderly patients live alone or with limited family support, our program includes a dedicated patient coordinator who accompanies them through every step of their care journey — from registration and examination to surgery and post-operative follow-up. We also provide free transportation for elderly patients who cannot travel to the hospital independently. For those with chronic conditions like glaucoma or diabetic retinopathy that require ongoing management, we have established a reminder and follow-up system that ensures they do not miss critical appointments. Our social workers also connect elderly patients with government pension schemes and other social security programs they may be eligible for, addressing the broader socioeconomic challenges that affect their health and wellbeing.

Program 07

Women Healthcare Outreach

In the patriarchal social structure of rural Jharkhand, women often prioritize the health needs of their families over their own, leading to significant delays in seeking eye care. Cultural norms, financial dependence, and limited mobility further restrict their access to healthcare services. SGVS's Women Healthcare Outreach program is specifically designed to overcome these barriers and ensure that women — who constitute more than half of the population yet are among the most underserved in terms of healthcare access — receive the eye care they need and deserve.

The program employs female community health workers who conduct door-to-door surveys and awareness sessions, creating a safe and comfortable space for women to discuss their health concerns. These workers are trained to identify women with eye problems, provide initial counseling, and facilitate their visit to screening camps or the hospital. Special women-only screening sessions are organized to address cultural sensitivities, where female ophthalmic staff conduct all examinations and procedures. This approach has proven highly effective in increasing women's participation in our programs, with female attendance at our women-specific camps being three times higher than at general camps.

Beyond eye care, our Women Healthcare Outreach program integrates general health awareness, including nutrition education, antenatal care information, and family planning resources. We collaborate with existing Anganwadi centers and self-help groups to create a network of support for women's health. The program also includes vocational training components for visually impaired women, helping them develop skills such as candle making, handicrafts, and basic computer operation that enable economic independence despite their visual limitations. Through this holistic approach, we are not just treating eye conditions but empowering women to take charge of their health and their lives, creating a ripple effect that benefits entire families and communities.

Program 08

Government Health Scheme Integration

SGVS India recognizes that sustainable, large-scale impact requires integration with government healthcare infrastructure and schemes. Our Government Health Scheme Integration program is dedicated to bridging the gap between government health entitlements and the communities that need them most. Despite the existence of comprehensive schemes like Ayushman Bharat, millions of eligible beneficiaries in rural Jharkhand remain unaware of their entitlements or face significant bureaucratic hurdles in accessing them. SGVS acts as a critical facilitator, guiding patients through the entire process from eligibility verification to claim settlement.

Our Ayushman Mitra desk at SGVS Hospital serves as a one-stop support center for patients seeking to avail government health scheme benefits. Trained staff assist with Aadhaar-based identity verification, scheme eligibility confirmation, card issuance, pre-authorization requests, and cashless treatment processing. For patients who do not possess the required identification documents, our team works with local authorities to facilitate document procurement and new registrations. This hand-holding approach has been instrumental in ensuring that the benefits of government health schemes actually reach the intended beneficiaries, rather than remaining trapped in administrative processes.

Beyond individual patient facilitation, SGVS actively participates in district and state-level health planning committees, advocating for the inclusion of comprehensive eye care services in government health programs. We have successfully lobbied for the inclusion of advanced eye procedures — such as vitreoretinal surgery and glaucoma laser treatment — in the Ayushman Bharat benefits package, expanding access to these critical services for millions of beneficiaries. Our partnership with the National Programme for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment (NPCB&VI) enables us to conduct government-sponsored cataract surgeries at scale, while our collaboration with the Jharkhand State Health Society supports district-level blindness control planning and implementation. Through these strategic partnerships, we multiply our impact many times over, leveraging government resources and infrastructure to extend quality eye care to communities that would otherwise remain unreached.
